Go With Your Gut: The Importance of Probiotics

The mantra many of us spew with pride when inquired about our wellbeing goes something like: “Good! I’ve been really busy.” Demanding schedules keep us on a constant go, however, we are often caught running on empty and pushing our health further and further down our agendas.

One of the most common maladies stemming from overloaded schedules is an overburdened digestive system. Our digestive system is the machine that converts our food into useable energy so we can keep on keeping on. There are many components that keep our digestive system well oiled and running smoothly and among some of the most important contributors are probiotics.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are the “good” bacteria in our gut. They are living microorganisms that provide various health benefits, such as aiding digestion, supporting the immune system, and preventing obesity. Before you reach for a quick fix bottle of unregulated supplements, try adding some of these probiotic rich foods to your daily diet:

  1. Yogurt

With at least 100 million cultures of good bacteria per gram, yogurt is packed with the probiotics necessary to get your digestive tract, well, back on track. Try to avoid flavored yogurts, as they are loaded with added sugars. Stick to plain Greek yogurt as much as possible.

  1. Tempeh

Tofu’s more delicious cousin is not only packed with probiotics, but a ton of protein and fiber. Use it as a meat substitute in stir-fries for a delicious weeknight dinner.

  1. Kimchi

This traditional Korean dish can spice up any meal. Made of mostly fermented cabbage, it’s a great low calorie option and research has linked it to not only improved gut health, but also and improved immune system and lower blood sugar.

  1. Kombucha

Replace your daily soda or bitter brew of choice with this probiotic potion. There’s no excuse with a label boasting of natural caffeine, low calories, and numerous flavors to choose from.

  1. Sourdough Bread

The mouthwatering tang you experience when noshing on a fresh slice of sourdough is the taste of health! Low on the glycemic-index, it will keep you full instead of going through a fun little energy spike and crash.

Biotic literally means life. So when we consume probiotics we are promoting abundant life. Feed your body with the fuel it needs to thrive in your daily routine and conquer the chaos! A balanced digestive system leads to a balanced life.
