From improving your mood to protecting your heart to keeping your brain healthy, each day seems to bring with it a new scientific report on the benefits of exercise.
No matter how strong the evidence, you still find that you have to drag yourself to the gym, dreading every second. Or maybe you get excited about starting a new workout routine only to find yourself ditching it a week later. It might seem like no matter what tricks you use to motivate yourself (ahem, bribing yourself with sweets) you just hate working out.
But the real reason you hate working out so much probably has nothing to do with the actual exercising at all.
The real reason you hate working out isn’t because it’s hard, it’s because you’re doing it for the wrong reasons, i.e., working out to lose weight, working out to look good at the beach, and working out to be able to eat whatever you want.
Think of the last time you were trying to motivate yourself through a workout. Were you critiquing your body in the mirror the whole time? Were you just exercising in the hopes of losing weight? Were you trying to justify polishing off an entire pizza when you got home?
Trying to motivate yourself this way—by focusing on the negative—makes it incredibly hard to have a positive experience when it comes to exercise. Thus, you hate doing it. But changing your motivation can make all the difference.
It’s time to stop working out for the wrong reasons and start working out for the right reason—to be able to fully enjoy the activities you find enjoyable and live life to the fullest.
Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or simply playing with your kids, working out to be able to fully enjoy these activities is both the purpose and the positive encouragement you need to stay motivated in your work out. And yes, staring to see some muscle definition is a great side effect.
